CAB Theatres focus continues to be original works but also continues to be open and ready to contribute to many other groups. Over the years CAB has been a part of developing and facilitating many unique programs.
Original Works
Several times a year a call is put out for local writers, actors, directors to come together and create something brand new. CAB theatre members come together to develop a show. These shows can be a series of one act plays put together in a collaborative performance, or a whole plays. Over the years the group has produced cabarets, talent shows, open mic style stories and a lot more. MaCABre has become a fixture in the fall, while the spring has seen many different themes, from Lost – a collection of plays centered around the ide of loss – whether its an item, a loved one or your mind. DysFUNctional, Surprise and Crazy Love have all been locally driven and performed.
house plays
Inspired by the desire to bring greater diversity to the type of plays produced in our community, House Plays were born. Plays of all genres, with a small setting, a small cast and, perhaps, a small but curious and passionate audience, with these plays we will invite the public into our home – or your home, if you choose to host a House Play for your friends. Contact us if you’re interested!

Christmas CABaret and CABIN FEVER
In Decembers past, CAB and local guest musicians present a concert of holiday music in classic crooner style. Christmas CABaret strives not only to generate holiday cheer, but to give audiences an opportunity to hear this beloved and time-tested style of music performed live. Light appetizers are included and there is a cash bar.
CABIN FEVER Wisconsin is COLD in the winter. We who live in this tundra tend to spend the long, dark evenings at home indoors. Is it to prevent “cabin fever” that we hold our biggest fundraiser/show during the coldest time of the year? Or have our crazy ideas for this show been the result of “cabin fever”? All we know is that as long as Wisconsin experiences winter and small theatre companies struggle to remain afloat, we will hold a “Male Beauty Pageant”, an “80s Prom”, a “CAB Sullivan Variety Show”, and “Baraboo’s Got Talent”, as well as other quirky fun(d)-raising events!
Improv
In the custom of Second City and The Groundlings, CABs Improv Lab continues the tradition of creating captivating scenes using only the imaginations and skill of the actors involved.
CAB Improv has performed in the Baraboo Christmas Parade, at UW-Baraboo’s Summerset festival, at the Public Library, at the Al. Ringling Theatre (with Tom Farley!), during the Circus Parade and at local venues. One thing’s for certain: you never know where they’ll show up or what they’ll say or do next! READ MORE
Youth Musical Theatre Workshop – Also known as Showtime
Brought to you by the Baraboo Theatre Guild, the Creative Alliance of Baraboo (CAB), and Baraboo’s Department of Parks and Recreation, the lead instructors are Katie James (trained vocalist, voice instructor, WI Dells schools music teacher, and sometime UW Baraboo-Sauk Country College for Kids Glee Club Director) and Scott Rawson (CAB Theatre’s Play in a Weekend Director). In addition to rehearsing for the final production during the workshop, kids aged 7-14 play lots of theatre games and learn a wide range of theatre, voice and movement skills.
Play in a Weekend & tnt – teens ‘n’ theatre
These programs, while currently on hiatus, may be reimagined at a upcoming date.
Play in a weekend. Maybe it’s The Spindle and the Burp, a feminist and gassy retelling of Sleeping Beauty. Or maybe that weekend it’s Hamlet, Schmamlet, a reimagining of Shakespeare’s great tragedy in which Ophelia saves the day instead of drowns herself in a river. But what they really want to know is: What part will I get?! Students age 7 -14 audition in such a fun and funny way, that sometimes, on Sunday evening when they’re filling out the evaluation forms, they tell us that the auditions were the most fun they had all weekend! The young actors are given their parts. The playwrights have written the plays so that 1) everyone has a part, and 2) everyone has a really good, fun part is meant to stretch them as young actors. All day Saturday we balance rehearsal with games with snacks. On Sunday, after a final dress rehearsal, we put on the show for parents, grandparents, community members, and friends. READ MORE
TNT – Teens ‘n’ Theatre. In 2016, CAB Theatre launched Teens N Theatre (TNT). The purpose of TNT is to use theatre as a creative medium to help teens open up dialogues about real life issues that they face. We are writing plays that reflect current struggles a lot of teens in our community face. A small group of Sauk County-based teen actors will perform the play for their peers in communities around South Central Wisconsin. After each performance there will be a teen-led, but professional-supported, talk-back session. READ MORE
